This course is open to EMS users and aims to showcase some different Serge patches and control them with SuperCollider in a couple of different ways.

It is a collaboration between John Chantler (Serge) and Daniel M Karlsson (SuperCollider). The thinking here is that an analog sound source is desirable,
and an algorithmic composition approach to control is also desirable.

When: 11 - 26 February 2023, Saturdays & Sundays 10.00-15.00
Where: Elektronmusikstudion, Söder Mälarstrand 61, Stockholm
Teacher: Daniel M Karlsson, John Chantler
Fee: 2200 SEK + VAT
Language: English
Application deadline: 5 February 2023
Open to EMS users to apply here: Ansökan till EMS kurser - Elektronmusikstudion EMS

Participants are expected to be curious about Serge synthesis and have some experience with synthesis in general.

Participants are expected to be curious about SuperCollider while not required to have any previous experience with using the program or writing code.
The focus while using SuperCollider will be on Getting Things Done controlling the Serge.

The course is given in English.

Course plan and implementation
The course runs over 3 consecutive weekends.

General overview:
11-12/2 10.00-15.00 incl. communal lunch
18-19/2 10.00-15.00 incl. communal lunch
25-26/2  10.00-15.00 incl. communal lunch

Detailed overview:
10:00 - 12:00 Patching & Coding
12:00 - 13:00 Communal Lunch
13:00 - 15:00 Coding & Patching

Daniel walks everyone through getting their computers sat up and working properly to be able to control the Serge from SuperCollider.
John walks everyone through getting sat up to listen and record the Serge while patching.
The participants get SuperCollider patches as files as well as history of evaluated code after each session.

Serge patches are given to participants in the form of patch sheets as well as audio recordings at the end of each session delivered as links to files on the internet.

Participants who have access to Mac’s where they have admin rights can bring those to get them sat up to use SuperCollider.

All other operating systems; You’ll need to either work this out on your own, or get help from someone else.

Course teachers
Daniel M Karlsson is composer focused primarily on texture and timbre.
He works extensively with algorithmic composition.

John Chantler is a musician and organizer living in Stockholm, Sweden. He mostly works with synthesizers and electronics to create unpredictable, highly dynamic music where passages of spare, alien beauty bridge held chords, saturated in harmonic distortion. In 2019 he started building a system for performance consisting of multiple battery powered synthesizer/speaker things that can be variably suspended, swung, spun and set in locations without depending on the typical concert/club infrastructure and classical modes of performer/audience interaction.
Originally from Australia he spent a decade in London before moving to Sweden in 2014 where he directs a small annual festival for ‘other music’ in Stockholm called Edition
